Session 1 - The Nature of Scripture and the Need for Interpretation



Overview: In this session we look at why the very nature of the Bible and our own situation demands that we carefully consider how to interpret the Scripture.

Session 2 - Introduction to Hermeneutics and Exegesis

Overview: In this session we look at hermeneutics & exegesis, and lay out the central Person and message of Scripture, by which each individual passage my be interpreted. That central Person is Jesus Christ, and all of Scripture is focused on His Person and work.

Session 3 - Introduction to the Grammatical-Historical Method of Interpreting Scripture



Overview: In this session we look at the grammatical-historical method of interpreting the Bible (as opposed to the allegorical method), discussing how to determine the meaning of words, common mistakes made in doing word studies, and the importance of grammar.

Session 4 - The Importance of Studying Contextually

Overview: In this session we look at the importance of studying contextually. We must not only study words, but consider sentences, paragraphs, sections, books, and ultimately the whole of Scripture to understand what God is saying.

Session 5 - Genre and Literary Devices

Overview: In this session we look at the importance of recognizing genre and the many literary devices that are used in the Scripture. If we do not properly recognize and interpret these devices, we will miss the true meaning of God's Word and believe error.

Session 6 - The Historical and Cultural Context of Scripture



Overview: In this session we look at the importance of the historical and cultural context of the Bible. To properly interpret God's Word, we must take history seriously, and we must distinguish timeless truths from cultural practices.

Session 7 - Essential Tools for Bible Study

Overview: In this session we look at the essential tools needed for studying God's Word, including such things as good translations, cross reference aids, lexicons, commentaries, study bibles, systematic theologies and more.

Session 8 - Computer Tools for Bible Study

Overview: In this session we look at various tools available on computers and the internet which can aid in our exploration of God's Word.

Session 9 - Letting Christ's Word Dwell In You Richly

Overview: In this session we look at the hand illustration from the Navigators to see five ways we can get God’s Word into us: hearing, reading, studying, memorizing and meditating.

Session 10 - Applying the Principles On A Single Passage

Overview: In this session we look at a single passage and attempt to apply many of the principles discussed in the rest of the seminar. The passage to be considered is Genesis 12:1-7. What does this text mean, and how do we see it fulfilled today?

Note: Due to technical difficulties this session was not recorded. However, a teaching with very similar information can be downloaded below. Do note, however, that the teaching below only discusses Genesis 12:1-3, so a lot of the information in the seminar handout is not covered. Nonetheless, it uses many of the concepts discussed in the seminar and shows the meaning and current application of the text.
